The miracle is not to fly in the air, or to walk on the water, but to walk on the earth.

Nukus — in step with the times

Nukus is the capital of the sovereign Republic of Karakalpakstan as a part of Uzbekistan. Despite the fact that Karakalpakstan is in severe environmental conditions due to the drying of the Aral Sea, Nukus lives a modern life. The city has modern buildings, parks and gardens, there is an international airport and railway station; international highway passes through the city. The main sightseeing of the city that attracts many tourists is Museum of Igor Savitsky, where collected more than 50 000 paintings and other works of art.

A young city on the ancient land

Nukus was founded in XX century, so in comparison with other cities of Uzbekistan it is very young. But archaeological excavations have shown that the land on which stands the city has an ancient cultural layer dating IV century BC - IV century AD. Here was located Shurcha settlement that served as an North-West outpost of the ancient Khorezm Kingdom. Not far from Nukus there is also an ancient object of pilgrimage - Mizdakhan necropolis, with innumerous cultural layers, and the age of the graves counts hundreds of years.

Surrounded by three deserts

The location of the city is not to be envied: to the South from Nukus there lies Karakum desert, to the East there is Kyzylkum desert, and to the Northwest in place of the water surface of the Aral Sea recently appeared a new big desert - Aralkum. However, the city grows and develops, battling with salt and sands.
