Atyrau


City in the delta of the Ural river

Atyrau is the center of Atyrau region of Kazakhstan. It is located in the west of Kazakhstan, stretching along both banks of Ural river. The city was founded in 1640 by merchants Guriev engaged in fishing, so until 1991 it was called Guriev. At the time of establishment, in the XVII century, Guriev was located at the confluence of the Ural river into the Caspian Sea, but the Caspian Sea level since then has greatly declined, so the sea moved away from the city to 25-30 km.

The bridge from Asia to Europe

Atyrau is located at two parts of the world - Europe and Asia. Ural river divides Atyrau to two continents. The world longest pedestrian bridge (included into the Guinness Book of World Records) connects two banks of the river Ural. You can walk by this bridge from one continent to another, from Asia to Europe and vice versa. From the middle of a bridge there is a wonderful panorama over the Ural river to "Eurasia" avenue.

The oil capital of Kazakhstan

Atyrau is the largest center of oil development in Kazakhstan. Not far from the city there is a large Tengiz oilfield, which began to be developed in the 90s of the last century. The President of Kazakhstan Nazarbayev proposed to name the city "the oil capital of Kazakhstan". In addition to oil and gas Atyrau region develops fishing, here operates a large cannery factory.

The capital of Batu Khan

In addition to world longest bridge Atyrau has a lot of objects to offer to tourists. First of all this is antique city of Sarayjuk (Saraychik), founded in the mid XIII century by the grandson of Genghis Khan — Khan Batu. The Sarayjuk in those days was a major trading and political center, through it passed the Great Silk Road, here ruled and came to the throne the khans of the Golden Horde. Also in Atyrau were preserved such architectural monuments of the XIX century as several muslim mosques and an orthodox church.
