Khorog


Capital of Pamir

Khorog town is located 525 km to the east from Dushanbe at the altitude of 2200 m. This outstanding town is sometimes called "Capital of Pamir". It is situated on the bottom of a deep mountain gorge at the confluence of the Gunt river with the Panj river near the border with Afghanistan. Khorog is the administrative center of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO). Famous Pamir Highway runs via this town; from here start many routes to GBAO.

Hometown of intellectual elite of the country

Khorog is not big, but very beautiful and green town. Summer in Khorog is warm and dry since the town is surrounded by mountains and protected from the strong winds. Population of Khorog is about 30 thousand people, and they are Pamir Tajiks (Pamirians) who are different in appearance and lexicon from other Tajiks. They profess a religion called Ismailism. Moreover, residents of Khorog have a high level of education and intelligence. This mountainous town has at its disposal several major institutions of higher education.

Tourist center of Pamir

The place where Khorog lies is pretty picturesque. Tourists enjoy the pristine beauty of this nature, magnificent views of the Pamir mountains. Above the town rises the majestic Mayakovsky Peak (6096 m). The number of tourists who wish to visit Pamir highlands grows from year to year. In Khorog there are all kinds of service for tourists: comfortable hotels, shopping centers, service stations, Internet cafes, ethnic restaurants. Khorog has an airport from where aircrafts make regular flights to Dushanbe.

Unique high-mountain botanical garden

Not far from Khorog on the slope of Shahdara gorge at the altitude of 2320 m above sea level, there is a high-mountain botanical garden. It is the second botanical garden (after Nepal) in the world by height above sea level. Here on the steep mountain terraces recreated natural conditions for growth of rarest specimens of plants that almost disappeared from our planet. Collection of this botanical garden counts over 4000 species of plants. The total garden area is over 500 hectares.

Mineral spring Garm-Chashma

42 km from Khorog in the beautiful and picturesque valley at an altitude of 2800 m there is one of the main attractions along Pamir Highway — a natural mineral water spring Garm-Chashma, which has been existing for several thousand years. On the basis of a healing spring was built hydropathic establishment, that is popular not only across Tajikistan but also in CIS and Europe.
