Andijan

Ancient city in Fergana valley

The ancient city of Andijan is located in the southeastern part of the Fergana valley on the river Andijansai, surrounded by the mountains. Over the centuries, the city was shaken by strong earthquakes, so there are not many well-preserved ancient monuments in Andijan. Here was built the largest in the Fergana valley Jomi mosque (XIX c) that occupies an area around one and half hectares. Its huge dimensions impressed the contemporaries - the main facade included twenty-six arch openings.

Homecity of the famous ruler Babur

In the city of Andijan stands the magnificent bronze monument, dedicated to its famous native. Yes, this city is the birthplace of Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur, descendant of Tamerlane and outstanding military leader and statesman of the middle ages. Due to the challenging political situation in the region in the XV century, Babur was forced to leave his homeland and head South, to India, where he became the founder of the Great Mughal Empire. In addition to his conquests, Babur is known as a poet and historian, famous for his book "Babur-name" translated into more than 30 languages. House of Babur, being part of monumental complex to this great ruler, is opened for tourists in Andijan.
