Green town Shakhrisabz (Shahrisyabs) is a small but very pleasant town lying in the foothills of the Zarafshan and Gissar mountain ridges. "Green town" - is a translation of its name from the Persian. Located in 80 km South of Samarkand, Shakhrisabz is one of the oldest cities on Earth, having existed for more than 27 centuries. Once founded by the Sogdians, this town had a name Kesh for centuries.
Hometown of Tamerlane Everything in Shakhrisabz is somehow connected with the name of Tamerlane (Amir Temur). Here, on the outskirts of Shakhrisabz, was born this great military leader and ruler. He used this city as his residence, and later as the second capital of his empire. On this land buried Tamerlane's father Amir Taragay and spiritual mentor Shamsiddin Kulol, Tamerlane's older children Jahangir and Omar Sheikh. Great warchief had bequeathed to bury himself there, in his homeland, but fate decreed otherwise. Until now the town keeps several magnificent architectural monuments, thanks to which in the year 2000, Shakhrisabz was added to UNESCO World Heritage List.
Being visited by Marco Polo Thanks to its favorable geographic location, Shakhrisabz was one of important trade centers on the Great Silk Road. Today, starting from Tashkent, via Shakhrisabz leads international highway - Big Uzbek Tract. Exactly via this town a famous Italian traveller of XIII century Marco Polo made his journey. The road from Samarkand to Shakhrisabz is especially impressive: the highway passes through high mountain pass Takhta-Karacha, which offers a beautiful panorama.
A new life of Shakhrisabz In 2014 in Shahrisabz was started a large-scale urban redevelopment and reconstruction. It was decided to modernize the city's infrastructure in light of the fact that the city comes more and more tourists. Several parks and walking zones were created, main roads were expanded.
